What is a Started Dog?  A started dog is usually young enough to have about three consistent commands, and old enough to know how to handle itself around stock.  This depends on the age of the individual dog; usually it’s a minimum of one year.  These dogs can be handy enough to use to gather, but are not finished cattle dogs in their training.

Why a Started Dog instead of a Puppy?  Everyone loves puppies!  Unfortunately, at weaning there is no way to tell what a puppy may be like at maturity.  Picking a puppy knowing that both parents work is very important, but still does not guarantee personality or work ethic when it’s mature.  Many prospective owners will pick out a puppy, fall in love with it, and take it home.  After the cute puppy stage changes into an awkward and rambunctious stage, the owners’ original enthusiasm may change also.  At this point, the owner has fed the dog for several months only to find that it does not mature into what was originally hoped for.  Environment, bloodlines, strengths, and weaknesses all play major factors in the mature working cattle dog.

Why is buying a started dog like buying a started horse?  It is much like buying a colt when it’s weaned, then waiting for 3 years to find out if that colt is actually going to do the job.  It is far better to simply buy a young horse with several months training on it and know exactly what is being purchased at the time of purchase.  A person is money ahead to purchase something that can be taken home, get acquainted with, and go to work while avoiding unnecessary costs of raising, feeding, vet bills, mistakes, and mishaps.  The same applies to the Started Cattle Dog.

What Breed is offered?  Mostly Kelpies, however, occasionally Border Collies are available.  These may, or may not be registered pure bred.  Remember there is “No bad color on a good dog.”

What type of commands?  These Started Dogs are on easy to understand verbal commands of “Down, Come, and Get Ahead.”

What type of stock are these dogs trained on?  Trained on cattle, these dogs are prepared to work cattle.

What is the price?  These dogs start at $1,500, in addition to any shipping or variable costs on a case-by-case basis.  Visa and MasterCard© are welcome.

Are outside dogs taken to train?  Yes, on a very selective basis, outside dogs are accepted to train.

Purchasing a Started Dog provides an opportunity to observe the personality, temperament, and working characteristics of the prospect to better evaluate the outcome of becoming working partners.  Although these young working dogs can make wonderful pets, they are intended to go to working homes, and must have the opportunity to work.  Viewing these prospects in person is to your advantage.  In your selection process, it is important to be informative on what type of work you do, what your expectations may be, and above all, please be realistic.  We are ALL in search of the “Perfect Stock Dog.”  With the all the shortcomings we humans have, finding the perfect stock dog is a never-ending search!
